- Where does OSIDE's Oceanside surf data come from?
- Wave height, period and water temperature come from NDBC/CDIP buoy 46224 (Oceanside Offshore). Wind comes from the National Weather Service observation at Oceanside Municipal Airport (KOKB) and the NWS hourly forecast. Tides are NOAA predictions for La Jolla (station 9410230), the closest official tide station.
- What's a good surf period for Oceanside?
- Longer periods mean more organized waves. Around 12 seconds or more usually means cleaner, more powerful surf at the Pier and Harbor. Short periods under 8 seconds tend to be choppy wind swell.
- What wind is best for surfing in Oceanside?
- Offshore wind (from the east) grooms the waves and is best, usually in the early morning. Onshore wind (from the west, often building after late morning) makes surf bumpy. Under about 6 mph is clean regardless of direction.
- Pier or Harbor: where should I surf?
- The Pier picks up most swell and works on both sides. The Harbor jetties can offer shelter and shape on bigger or windier days. Always check posted lifeguard warnings.
